Wilderness First Aid Course
The next Wilderness First Aid course is getting closer, the first of two scheduled this year.
When is it? 3-4 May 2025 (Registrations Close 19 April 2025 (during Easter))
Where? Fadden Pines Scout Hall, Coyne Street, Macarthur
Times? Saturday 9am - 5pm, and Sunday 9am to 3pm.
What is it?
a Wilderness First Aid course, including a formal assessment which permits participants to obtain two VET units through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT) - SISOFLD004 Provide First Aid in Remote locations, and SISXEMR002 Coordinate Emergency Responses.
The third unit in the Wilderness First Aid Skill Set is the more familiar Provide First Aid VET unit for which there are many providers, and which Scouts ACT also coordinates for its members, two such one day courses are running on the 22 or 23 March, with the closing date next weekend.
Why is this important?
Because many higher Stages of the OAS require the Wilderness First Aid Skill Set (meaning hold the three VET units); and many Adventurous Activities Guide Appointments also require it. It's also useful for those who venture further afield when Scouting (think bushwalking, skiing, 4WD adventures, remote camping, off shore sailing, etc). It's not often available by private providers and is quite expensive, whereas it can now be achieved through Scouting at a modest cost.
Are there any prerequisites?
you need to hold a current Provide First Aid qualification, or be prepared to obtain it reasonably soon. This means the VET unit HLTAID003 if it is still current (less than three years since issue), or the newer HLTAID011 unit.
you also need to be a registered member of Scouts ACT, or of another Scouts Branch - so we can issue the qualification;
preferably at least 14 years old - VET units can only be issued to those 14 years or older, though we can issue a certificate of completion; and
some experience in the outdoors is expected.
What does it cost? $90
How do I register? Register through the Members area of the website - Training / Register for courses - course 487. Any problem doing so, let me know.
